European Sapphire: 100 kg at W3+ Fair Jena | SAPPHCOM

European sapphire: the SAPPHCOM team with a 100 kg boule at W3+ Fair Jena 2026
European sapphire you could reach out and touch: our stand at W3+ Fair Jena 2026.

European sapphire took centre stage at our stand in Hall 2 at W3+ Fair Jena on 23 and 24 September 2026: a clear sapphire crystal roughly the size of a cabin suitcase. The 100 kg boule came from our partner, Falcon Sapphire.

As Falcon Sapphire’s exclusive EU distribution partner, we brought this Kyropoulos-grown sapphire boule to Jena. Our managing director, Sebastian Löslein, who has spent more than 15 years helping companies specify and source synthetic sapphire, and his colleague Markus Pavlekovic made it the centrepiece of our stand for two days. Live demonstrations also showed the demanding conditions sapphire can withstand — and brought some visitors back more than once.

It soon became clear that bringing the boule had been well worth the effort. Many visitors had only encountered sapphire as a cut blank or a finished window. Now they could see and touch the crystal those components start out as.

Why bring 100 kg of sapphire to a trade fair?

Because very few people have ever seen a crystal like this up close.

Many engineers regularly specify sapphire windows or blanks. Standing beside the crystal from which those components are made is a different experience. A boule of this size shows what industrial sapphire growth looks like before the first cut. It starts conversations that a datasheet alone rarely can.

The exhibit also made something tangible that can remain abstract in a brochure: this sapphire was grown in Europe. Its subsequent processing into components also takes place within the EU.

Meeting industry professionals, researchers and students

Our stand brought together specialists in optics, procurement, precision manufacturing and photonics. International visitors and many students also showed a keen interest. One question came up particularly often: how do you grow such a large single crystal, and how long does it take? For the boule on display, the answer was around two weeks.

There was another reaction we had not planned for: visitors kept reaching out to place a hand on the crystal. Some even treated it as a good-luck charm. A comment on our partner’s LinkedIn post captured the mood: touch the sapphire and make a wish. There was certainly room for that at our stand.

European sapphire: grown and processed in the EU

One question featured in many of our conversations: is this sapphire actually available from European production? The answer is yes.

Falcon Sapphire grows single-crystal sapphire using the Kyropoulos method in Ventspils, Latvia. According to our partner, current production is 300 kg per month, with an increase to 1,000 kg per month planned for 2027.

Crystal growth is only part of the process. Falcon Sapphire also processes the material itself: each boule undergoes 3D scanning to identify defects, followed by coring, slicing, grinding and finishing in-house. The resulting components include cylinders, blanks, optical windows, prisms and custom parts made to customer drawings. Explore our sapphire components and custom parts for an overview of our product portfolio.

For companies looking to source sapphire closer to home, this offers an important option: crystal growth and machining from a single supplier within the EU, with a traceable production chain from melt to finished component. We help you assess how European sapphire can meet your project’s requirements, including applications in optics, measurement technology and research.
